Journalism was a kinder, gentler world when I left college in 1997.
I began my career as the education and health care reporter for the Las Cruces Sun-News, and I got to work with some amazing people.
Back in the day, I’m not sure whether I ever noticed this neon sign above the former Safeway store in which we worked.

I'm a cognitive scientist and communication scholar who manages a psychophysiology lab at Texas Tech. I teach courses about the cognitive processing of media messages and research methods.

because it is a newspaper they can no longer afford to light the entire sign…ironic that the word “sun” is the word that is not lit up.
In irony, this was the better side. “News” was out on the other side!
There’s something a little sad and telling about the ways the Sun in Sun News is burning out…or maybe, as a journalism refugee, I’m just reading too much into it.
