My third daughter, Piper, draws her name from one of my favorite people on Earth, Piper Coalson.
The older Piper played soccer for Las Cruces (N.M.) High School when I was sports editor of the Las Cruces Sun-News. (You can read about that team here). She was a star, and her personality and charisma amazed me both on the field and off. We remain friends today.
This week my Piper begins play on an Under 6 soccer team, and I am going to help as an assistant coach on the team.
Her older sister, Chloé, had her first practice tonight, so I took the time to work on some fundamentals with Piper on the side.
Despite the cold wind, it was quite a bit of fun. And I can only hope that she loves soccer half as much as her namesake.
For fun, see a cute picture of a much younger Piper playing soccer here.
Oh, and the photo mostly sucks because I accidentally switched the camera settings and overexposed everything with way too slow of a shutter speed.

I'm a cognitive scientist and communication scholar who manages a psychophysiology lab at Texas Tech. I teach courses about the cognitive processing of media messages and research methods.

Can’t wait to read your novel someday. You really are a writer……like father, like son?
