Tuesday I had the privilege of participating on a panel as part of the Diversity Lecture Series at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
The panel was organized by Kent Wilkinson, our regents professor in international and Hispanic communication.
We presented research from out 2007 multidisciplinary project studying health communication related to diabetes among rural West Texas Hispanics.
It was an honor to speak at a medical school, and it was extremely informative to interact with physicians and professors of medicine and nursing.
Our panel was shown at multiple TTUHSC sites around Texas using distance learning technology, and I anticipate that we will be able to undertake some new collaborative projects with professionals at these other sites.
Reaching out is something we all need to do in our daily lives. No matter how intellectually stimulating your colleagues are, new insight is always valuable.
My thanks to Dr. Wilkinson for setting up the panel and to the Health Sciences Center for inviting us. Further thanks to fellow panelists Dr. Todd Chambers, chair of the department of electronic media, and Dr. Amy Heuman, assistant professor of communication studies.

I am sad I missed this. I saw the flyers all over the HSC the last couple of weeks and I was very interested in attending. But I found out that morning I was scheduled to be in surgery during it (to film, that is). I heard it was recorded though, so hopefully I can find a copy.
I still would like to set up some time to visit with you about health communications.

I would encourage anyone to have an educated conversation or two concerning diabetes prevention–I wish I had engaged in more of those before I was diagnosed with it. There are many things missed in talking about how to prevent it when you don’t converse with someone knowledgeable.
sam can you send me the abstract of your work or the methods of the study you did? the first study I worked at while at Univ. of CO Denver Health Sciences Center was on how an online program affects the self-care of patients with type 2 diabetes.
thanks!
