Teaching

My Philosophy

As an undergraduate, I had teachers who ran the gamut from excellent to incompetent. When I decided that I wanted to be a university professor, I decided that I wanted to be a good teacher in addition to a strong researcher. Although I have no specific training in pedagogical methods, my teaching philosophy is rather simple, but it has been effective.

  • Keep them interested
  • Make it relevant
  • Be passionate about what you're teaching

This approach worked for me training young writers at the student newspaper at New Mexico State, it worked with new sports writers when I was a sports editor, it worked in the classroom, and it works with new graduate students who come into our lab.
